Children Laughing, People Passing

My Christmas stocking making career begin with our son's second Christmas.  I wanted him to have a nice stocking, so I decided I'd make one.  I picked a verse and sketched the drawing and cross stitched my heart out.  I did the same two years later for his sister.

Then I hung their finished stockings side by side and realized I should have decided on a universal size, because one was tall and skinny and one was short and fat.  My sense of perfection could not live with that, so I redid their stockings and have based every stocking I've done since then on that second set.

I have made 8 stockings since then, plus sewn together 5 others, front, back, lining, and trim, usually doing that last bit on Christmas Eve.  I do like to procrastinate.

This year I am working on my niece's stocking.  Picking the right song took her mom and I weeks, finding the right fabric was just about impossible, but here it is, 19 days till Christmas, and I have pulled out the threads and started over twice and whenever I am sitting in a quiet moment, I hear snip of the song I am sewing.....

Children laughing
People passing
Meeting smile after smile........

It's a good thing I am a fan of Christmas music!  It is stuck solidly in my head.

This post inspired by prompt #5 at Mama's Losin' It!

And I'm linking up with Tid Bit Thursday over at Papa is a Preacher.

  1. Annie made stockings when the boys were small, and we hang them every year. I love this post because of the way you love Christmas. How can there be folks who do not love Christmas? Just asking...

    1. My daughter told me my stocking making ability is a reason she would have kids earlier....so I won't be too old to make stockings for her kids!

  4. My mother-in-law made us all stockings . . . luckily I loved them! But I kind of like the idea of not matching stockings - - maybe matching stocking-owner's personality instead of size, shape, etc.! That would be cool!

    1. It would be cool! But being a Mom who counts every piece of candy to make sure it is fair, I'm positive I couldn't do a size difference.

  5. That's a great idea, sewing a verse onto their stockings.

    1. Thanks! It started because I like the verse, "Today in the City of David..." and since my son is named David, it seemed a perfect match!

  6. You mostly had to sew on Christmas Eve because it would take me the entire year to make my boys! So happy though, they are my favorite part of my Xmas decor!!

    1. I didn't want to point fingers! Although, this Christmas Eve will find me most likely find me frantically sewing RJC's stocking! I'm that behind schedule.

  7. Handmade Christmas stockings with verses on them is so clever. I am sure they will be a treasure that will be passed down through the generations.

  8. OMG, I am so jealous of your talent! We moved and I cannot find my son's stocking. I will probably be buying one for him at the 99 cent store.

    1. Thank you! I spent years laboring through embroidery projects before I discovered cross stitching. It is so much easier to make an 'X'!

  9. Oh goodness... I will be singing that all day today.. (:

I'm actually quite jealous of your talent too.. I've done a bit of cross stitching, but...I ended up cross stitching my fingers a couple to many times..hehe.

    Thanks for linking up!

  10. I love the imprints on your stockings! I made some for my kids 20 years ago, and we still use them, but I love the idea of having them portray the Holy Family, rather than just a Christmas theme. Very nice!
