My favorite place to sit was on the front steps. My son would play in the yard, periodically running up to the sidewalk to peer down the street, looking for Daddy's truck to appear (because that is what we were all waiting for!), while I sat on the steps, usually nursing my daughter.
Yes. We are those kind of people.
Our next door neighbor was a nice enough older woman, who kept to herself, and that suited me just fine because I kept to myself, except for the occasional (okay, all the time) staring into her kitchen as I stood in my kitchen washing the dishes.
I discovered quickly that she had a gentleman caller. And then I discovered that his name was Kinky.
Really? Okay, I knew then that my front porch nursing was not going to be a problem with the neighbors!
I later learned, through my Mom who knew his daughter, that it was a nickname (thank goodness) due to his curly hair (thank goodness again!)
For the year and a half that we lived there, we enjoyed their non-meddlesome, non-judgmental, neighbor-ness!
This post was inspired by prompt #3 at Mama's Losin' It! while still trying to do the A to Z challenge!
Front porch reflections are definitely interesting! Kinky huh...LOL!
ReplyDeleteI live just a block from that old brick house, and I smile every time I see that porch. It seemed a lot bigger back when we lived there!
DeleteLol on that nickname...
ReplyDeleteHope you’re enjoying the challenge so far!

good neighbors are greatt. I like to sit on the front steps and watch the kids play too. kaye—the road goes ever ever on
ReplyDeleteI've moved to the backyard at our current house, and it's less kid watching and more dog watching now that I have teenagers! Still enjoyable!
Deletewe used to have some neighbors with some pretty strange nick-names also--front porches are the best
ReplyDeleteOur front porch now has the best chairs for sitting...my husband and I love a warm summer evening, a cool drink, and the sounds of the neighborhood as we sit.
DeleteThis made me laugh. :) I'm glad you got to enjoy their good neighborness! I bet she enjoyed yours, too. :)
ReplyDeleteI hope so! I think I'm the right kind of neighbor, friendly but not meddlesome. I will catch your dog if I see him running loose and keep him safely inside my own house if I can't get your gate to latch!
DeleteHere's to entertaining (and accepting) neighbors. We've been fairly lucky in the neighbor department, for which I've always been thankful.
