Congratulations! You succeeded in scaring the bejesus out of me.
In my defense, when I first saw your shadowy shape across the dark grassy field, your head was tucked down and all I saw was four legs and a body. My first thought was Big Dog coming my way! Then my brain registered the very un-dog like way you were moving and my thoughts turned to Something is moving this way!
I may have said as much in a panicked voice to my husband, and he may have looked up and everywhere trying to pinpoint the threat, the slobbering, red eyed, rabid dog that was charging our way.....then when we ascertained it was just you, a deer, my husband was surprised I stayed.
There are three things I do not want to meet on a dark field (or anywhere else): a deer, a bear and a dolphin.
But I held my ground and the dogs remained (as always) oblivious and you wandered away from us and I felt shaky and weak and my pulse was pounding. That was a close call.
Later I heard a neighbor talking about how exciting it was to walk out to her car and find you (because how on earth could there be two deer in a half block in town at about the same time) and you were so lovely and cute.
Huh. Not at all the impression you gave me. I count myself lucky to have walked away from our encounter!
Don't watch Kangaroo Mob on PBS. I would have to add kangaroos to my list of hated animals!
ReplyDeleteThose things are intense!
DeleteWe have some field-sie trails we walk on and sometimes there are deer that I'm convinced are going to charge us! Also we see bear poop too, so it freaks me out a little.
ReplyDeleteLOL at Dolphins!
There is something too nice about deer that makes me think they are up to something! Same with dolphins. And bears, well, I read too many drama in real life stories in the Readers Digest to ever think of bears as cute!
DeleteThat was a bit scary for sure.
ReplyDeleteI'm not crazy about walking in the dark in the first place! This morning I had my eyes and ears wide open in case the deer was still hanging around. It wasn't, thank goodness!
DeleteThat was probably the same dear I saw crossing the street in front of the hospital yesterday...What is up with this deer? Doesn't it know it should go to it's home?! :)
ReplyDeleteTotally. Go home to your creepy dark woods and leave the sidewalks to people and dogs!
DeleteThe halfway house where I work is at the edge of town and we frequently have deer in the edges of the yard, etc. I was walking out to my van the other night and heard a coyote howling in the distance (also not uncommon). I had my head turned toward the sound and when I turned back toward my van, I saw a shadowy shape about fifteen feet away and was absolutely certain it was a coyote checking me out. It turned out to be a deer, which was a relief. He just looked at me for a second, then turned and ambled up the hill where two of his counterparts were waiting for him.
ReplyDeletePS--The image of encoutering a dolphin in a dark field will stay with me a long time. ;)
My kids and I encountered a coyote in the parking lot of our grocery store. I know the rumor is it is more scared of us....but I was pretty scared and it looked pretty fearless. And maybe a little sickly.
DeleteWe hear coyotes often, but VERY rarely see them. Everyone tells me how "shy" they are--so if I did see one (especially close up) I would automatically assume it was rabid or something.
DeleteI used to love dolphins. Now I'm thinking their smile is kind of a fishy Joker smile. *shudder*
ReplyDeleteVerification word: DerJoki yes, Deer with a Joker smile. That was creepy.
Oh, yes. I hate dolphins. It's an unpopular opinion but they freak me out. For something that lives in the mysterious deep dark ocean to be so friendly is really, really wrong!
