I Am A Creature Of Habit

I am a creature of habit. I tease my son about how he used to get so upset if  his schedule got messed up or how time anxious he was, but honestly, he got that from me. I have a schedule and I like to keep it.

Might not seem like it lately, when I haven't been getting to work at 9 like I plan, but more like 9:15 or 9:30. But I can explain. It's not just because I'm blogging every morning, it is because I am now trying to get four people ready to leave the house at the same time, with only one little bathroom.

I can't get in the bathroom right now, because my husband is shaving. So I sit and wait. I could be doing something to get ready, but this is where the creature of habit thing kicks in.  My morning routine is: I walk, I read, I blog, I shower, I dress, I pack my lunch, I do my hair, I leave for work.

In that order. If I skip one thing, the whole system shuts down and I'm walking out the door to go to work in fuzzy slippers. True story. Luckily, I realized I was wearing slippers as I started the car, so I ran back in the house and found my shoes.

It's not so much that I have to be doing the points on my schedule at a certain time, it's that I check off each point in that order.

I am late today because I am a creature of habit. I don't want to pack my lunch while I wait for the shower....that's not the way things are supposed to go!

  1. Oh! I totally get that! I'm the same way.
Time isn't that big a priority (although I agree it probably should be), as much as getting items on my list crossed off with a big fat line.
*shrug* It's one of our quirks I suppose.
Oh, and about the slippers, I have a friend who leaves a pair of shoes at work...just in case.

  2. I am so happy to know that we are not the only people in the U.S. with only one bathroom! It doesn't seem like such a big deal now that our children are out of the house and it's just me and my husband. And I guess it really wasn't that big a deal when they were all home!

  3. My sons know all about schedules. Annie, the boys, and I left the house exactly at 6:30 in the AM, for sixteen years, to get to school by seven. We didn't have to be there by seven, but if there was no set departure schedule for all of the gears to be able to mesh properly, we had weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth. As it was, it went as smoothly as possible, considering we had to travel down five miles each morning on a dirt road, to get to highway 101, for the run into town.

  4. We have more than one bathroom and we can STILL run behind on any given morning.

    Enjoy your family

  5. Larissa: now that I'm walking to work, I run less risk of wearing my slippers, but more risk that I'll be in tennis shoes and a skirt all day!

Judy: Oh, the joys of one bathroom! I'm glad to hear of others who know. We don't need a second one, even though it was on my list of what to look for in a house...but when we saw this house, even with one bathroom, we just fell in love.

Mark: the weeping and wailing done here is all done by me (sad to say!) but I can generally marshal the troops to leave within 10 minutes of our goal. I've tried given a goal time 10 minutes earlier, but the family got wise to me....

Patti: I wouldn't have thought it before, but one bathroom has actually given me some fun memories! I'll never forget getting ready for a party, doing my makeup and my son was trying on ties, and his best friend was trying on cardigans....all together in the only room with mirrors!

  6. One bathroom, five people household here. It's maddening, but we do have the blessing of being on slightly staggered schedules during the day.
